River Hawks Win Bentley Newport Invitational:
UMass Lowell men’s golf team won their first tournament of the year, taking first place at the Bentley Newport Division II Invitational.
The River Hawks shot a team score of 300, giving them the victory by four strokes over the second-place team, College of the Holy Cross.
Tournament hosts Bentley University took third place with a team score of 308. The field was rounded out by (in order of finish): Franklin Pierce University, Dowling College, Assumption College, American International College and the College of Saint Rose.
Sophomore Kevin Scott (Tyngsborough, Mass.) shot his second-best round of the year with a 1-over-par 73, placing him first for UMass Lowell and second overall as an individual in the tournament. Freshman Matthew Casavant (Reading, Mass.) finished second on the team and tied for fourth overall with a 75.
Junior Jonathan Burgin (Hampshire, England) and sophomore Eric Byrne (Derry, N.H.) shot rounds of 76, putting them tied for eighth overall. Senior Brian Valencia (Marlboro, Mass.) rounded out the squad with a 79.
“One of our team goals was to win a tournament this spring,” said head coach Ken Hughes. “We are thrilled to win. All of our players contributed to our success in this wonderful event hosted by Bentley University at the very difficult Newport National.”
The River Hawks’ team score of 300 is a new low for the season, breaking the previous mark of 301 set by the team at the Binghamton Fall Golf Invitational last Oct. 4.
Scott’s 73 tied him for the second-best round of the season amongst the team, behind his own mark of 71 at the ECAC Division I Men’s Intercollegiate Tournament last Sept. 28.
UMass Lowell will be back in action on April 17 when they travel to North Kingston, R.I., to compete in the Rhode Island Invitational.
